Sometimes you just have to take a break. Getting away from the homestead to do something fun for the day recharges your energy.
We had just the break which rarely happens for us. We are great at planning on going somewhere fun and then never following through because we end up working.
We both enjoy our work on the homestead and as you can imagine there is a lot of it. So, it is a good thing we can both enjoy it.
However, every once in a while, we actually do manage to follow through. Today was one of those days. The weather was sunny and mid 70’s; a perfect Spring day.
GETTING AWAY TO RESTORE ENERGY
We packed up our two dogs Daisy 10 and Marley 9 and headed north east for the one hour and twenty-minute car ride through the back roads of upstate New York.
First, we did some hiking on Shelving Rock Mountain. It was nice to walk with the dogs off leash. It was quiet as though we had the place to ourselves; an advantage of going mid-week.
As you might have guessed there were a lot of rocks on the trail as it snaked back and forth as you climbed higher and higher. The trail followed the stream which was very scenic especially as the sun dappled through the evergreens.
The dogs were happy to have access to fresh water along parts of the trail. They worked hard on their climb. And when a chipmunk sent out their squeaking sound both dogs charged toward the sound. Their instincts took over and both Daisy and Marley forgot all about their age.
We thought it in the dog’s best interest to cut the hike short and get them safely back down. Daisy was already limping and we knew Marley would be feeling it soon in her hips and legs.
However, before heading back home we just had to stop at Shelving Rock Falls. This was after all the place we came to see. It was only a .4 mile walk that was mostly easy to navigate.
The falls was nothing less than spectacular. We rested for a bit on the rocks, with the dogs, in front of the cascading falls before heading back home.
We will definitely incorporate more of these mini get-a-ways into our weeks.
Tomorrow will find us working harder, smarter and more efficiently with a bounce in our step. It is the perfect balance between work and play.
