TRY THESE NATURAL SORE THROAT HOME REMEDIES
This is a gargle solution that I use for both a cough and a sore throat. The recipe I use came from the book Essential Oils Natural Remedies by Althea Press.
I like the essential oils in this gargle recipe when I feel a sore throat coming on. They are so powerful that it often stops symptoms from further developing.
Essential oils are very strong and powerful compounds extracted from plants, rinds, flowers etc. I especially like the essential oils from Edens Garden.
Remedy One: Gargle Solution for cough and sore throat
2 drops of each essential oil; lavender, peppermint and lemon
1 oz lukewarm water
Combine and gargle till mixture is gone. Gargle between meals and especially before bed.
In the book Essential Oils Ancient Medicine by Dr Josh Axe et al there is a recipe for vapo-throat-chest rub. It is similar to Vick’s vapo rub only non-toxic and takes a few more ingredients than my simplified version below.
I prefer to just make this three-ingredient chest rub when I’m sick and need it now.
It helps clear congested sinuses so you can breathe more freely even at night. Or, if your chest is tight as though someone is sitting on it, this will help lift that.
Do you typically get colds that move easily into your chest?
I rub this on the outside of my throat and chest. When used in combination with the gargle solution you are working both the outside and inside of your throat. This is especially helpful at night, when you need a good night’s rest.
If colds tend to settle into your chest, then you will definitely want to also put some on your chest as well. This would act as a preventative measure and for me has averted many an illness from ever going into my chest.
Remedy Two: Easy Throat and Chest Rub
To make a quick oil blend using a 2% standard adult dilution. It goes like this:
3 drops Peppermint EO
3 drops Eucalyptus EO
1T carrier oil such as almond, avocado or grapeseed oil
Blend essential oils with carrier oil in small dish. Rub on outside of throat and chest. Keep dish covered tightly with plastic wrap so the essential oils do not dissipate into the air.
For children, I would use a 1% dilution: For infants check with your natural health care provider first before using any essential oils.
2 drops Peppermint EO
1 drop Eucalyptus EO
1T carrier oil such as almond, avocado or grapeseed oil
Follow the same instructions as the adult chest rub.
Remedy Three: Beneficial Immune Boosting Vitamins
Vitamin C Lipsomal
This vitamin C is not water soluble but instead is fat soluble. I find it works much more effectively. Be sure to take with an 8 oz glass of water and a meal.
It helps boost the immune system and protect against free radical damage.
Vitamin D3/K2
When your body isn’t getting enough vitamin D from natural sunshine, your immune system drops. Now, you become more susceptible to sickness. This is why colds and flus happen during the darker months of the year. It is also why people living in northern climates have more winter sicknesses.
Be sure your vitamin D3 also has K2 with it. The k2 helps the vitamin D3 be absorbed into your body. And, who wants to invest in vitamins that get flushed or just are not effective?
You can take a proactive approach by choosing to supplement during the fall and winter months with both vitamin D and vitamin C. This is often times enough to keep your immune system healthy throughout the colder, darker, winter months.
Remedy Four: The Power of Raw Honey
Unprocessed honey is called raw. This means it has not been heated to a high temperature and all of the beneficial vitamins and minerals remain intact. Obtain local raw honey for the best results. Raw honey is filled with important B vitamins. These are the ones that are especially beneficial when the body is under stress of any kind. When you are sick is just one way that shows your body is stressed.
I like to take one teaspoon of local raw honey any time that I’m feeling that tickle in my throat, burning in my throat, hard swallowing, coughing etc. Make sure that you have a large window of time when you will not be consuming any food or beverage. This gives the honey a chance to keep your throat coated helping you to heal faster and feel better.
Children under the age of one year old should not be given honey because of their undeveloped immune system. They may get infant botulism caused from the bacteria in the honey called clostridium botulinum.
Children older than one year old can benefit from raw honey instead of conventional cough syrups and medicines.
Children older than two years old, have more developed intestines so they are able to mount a defense against the harmful spores often found in raw honey.
Remedy Five: Hydration
Drink plenty of spring water. This helps to flush the toxins out of your body and keep you hydrated. Room temperature spring water is immediately absorbed into your body. It is also most often tolerated the best when it comes to sore throats and coughs.
Remedy Six: Sleep is Crucial
When you sleep, your body is able to clean house. Sleeping is a restorative process that happens each night in total and complete darkness. When you are sick, those extra hours of sleep allow your body to repair by removing the excess toxic buildup.
Quick Tips
Catch symptoms early for the shortest possible down time. If you are not already using vitamin C and D every day as a preventative, then begin when the slightest symptoms appear. This will boost your immunity shortening the overall duration of your illness.
Become aware of the subtleties your health plays out on your body. The quicker you can tune in to what doesn’t feel right, the quicker you can begin giving your immune system what it requires to overcome the sickness you are experiencing.
In conclusion, these all-natural sore throat home remedies pack a powerful punch towards removing your unwanted symptoms and restoring health.
